We have several opportunities this summer to contribute your skills and talents to organizations making a difference. As you commit to work alongside them, The World Awaits and it's partners will pick you up from the airport, arrange accomodation, and provide you with resources and materials to ensure your contribution is effective. Kenya - Fundraising / Business Development

Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Duration: 3 months minimum
Cost: $1685 for three months (accommodation/meals)
Eligible for stipend: Yes. $1000 will be awarded to an eligible candidate.
Placement Details: The African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN) is a pan-African network that promotes child rights and child protection in Africa. It has national chapters in 22 African countries and is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. One of the greatest goals of ANPPCAN is to move towards self-sustainability through a strategy of creative fund-raising and business development. They already have several systems in place, but are looking for a volunteer with a fund-raising and/or business background to help them improve and maximize their efforts. The placement would be primarily in the head office in Nairobi.

Kenya - Teaching at an Orphanage

Location: Ngong Hills, Kenya
Duration: 1 month minimum
Cost: $625 for one month (accommodation/meals) + $110 for each additional week
Eligible for stipend: Yes. Up to $500 will be awarded to an eligible candidate.
Placement Details: As in many countries, the Kenyan school system faces many challenges including limited resources, overcrowding, and lack of qualified teachers. Volunteers will work at a primary school that was built for orphans, but also serves local children in the community. The orphanage is very good at providing the children with the basic daily needs, but the children are often lacking the personal attention they need to really thrive. Volunteers will assist by teaching English and other subjects. Getting involved with extra curricular activities is also encouraged.

Kenya - Artist (Music/Drawing) to serve at Orphanage

Location: Ngong Hills, Kenya
Duration: 1 month minimum
Cost: $625 for one month (accommodation/meals) + $110 for each additional week
Eligible for stipend: Yes. Up to $500 will be awarded to an eligible candidate.
Placement Details: The Kenyan school system does not typically provide avenues to nurture and develop creativity in children. Volunteers may organize classes and educational activities to provide creative outlets for orphans/students. The orphanage is very good at providing the children with the basic daily needs, but the children are often lacking the personal attention they need to really thrive. Volunteers also have the chance to serve as role models and mentors to inspire and motivate the children to develop their creativity.

Kenya - Childcare Provider / Early Childhood Education at Orphanage

Location: Ngong Hills, Kenya
Duration: 1 month minimum
Cost: $625 for one month (accommodation/meals) + $110 for each additional week
Eligible for stipend: Yes. Up to $500 will be awarded to an eligible candidate.
Placement Details: Opportunities abound for those interested in nurturing orphans before they enrol in primary school. Of the 150 orphans, many are in the adolescent stages and would benefit greatly from early childhood education. The orphanage is very good at providing the children with the basic daily needs, but the children, especially the younger ones, are often lacking the personal attention they need to really thrive. Previous experience working with infants and adolescent children is required.

Kenya - Farming/Agriculture at Orphanage

Location: Ngong Hills, Kenya
Duration: 1 month minimum
Cost: $625 for one month (accommodation/meals) + $110 for each additional week
Eligible for stipend: Yes. Up to $500 will be awarded to an eligible candidate.
Placement Details: In order to encourage self-sustainability, this orphanage has allocated a significant portion of their land to growing crops and raising livestock. Any assistance to help them be more effective and productive with their investment would be greatly beneficial. Many of the older children are involved with helping to maintain these endeavours, so mentoring and teaching opportunities abound. Getting involved with the children and in extra curricular activities is also encouraged.

Kenya - Nursing Position at Orphanage/rural clinic

Location: Ngong Hills, Kenya
Duration: One month minimum
Cost: $625 for one month (accommodation/meals) + $110 for each additional week
Eligible for stipend: Yes. Up to $500 will be awarded to an eligible candidate.
Placement Details: The children in the orphanage are not afforded regular health care. As a result, any assistance in providing for these basic needs would be greatly beneficial. Several of the children are HIV positive and have special needs associated with that. There is also a rural clinic located close to the orphanage where the volunteer can provide and receive support. Applicants must have or be receiving formal training in nursing.

Kenya - Technical Building/Construction at Orphanage

Location: Ngong Hills, Kenya
Duration: 1 month minimum
Cost: $625 for one month (accommodation/meals) + $110 for each additional week
Eligible for stipend: Yes. Up to $500 will be awarded to an eligible candidate.
Placement Details: The orphanage is currently in the process of building new dormitories for the children. Currently, children are sleeping in triple bunk-beds with two children per bed. The dormitory construction could be expedited with the help of somebody skilled in construction. Getting involved with the children and in other extra curricular activities is also encouraged.
